Obituary of Shona Blaine Colvin

Our beloved matriarch, Shona Blaine Colvin, unexpectedly departed this world on April 9, 2023. Shona was a unique soul and a force to be reckoned with from the day she was born on July 6, 1947. Born to Horace Blain Colvin and Mavis Snider, she was delivered at home by her midwife grandmother in Hamilton, Alabama. She adored her daddy, who was always her North Star, and was fiercely protective of him and her younger siblings, Glen and Sharron, growing up.

 

Shona was exceptionally intelligent and never stopped learning and searching. She read constantly on a variety of subjects, from history to astronomy, and enjoyed conversations on deep subjects. Her favorite reading, and what gave her the most comfort, was always her scriptures. She dearly loved her Savior and her Heavenly Father her entire life. 

 

Shona was raised with fiddle, guitar, and banjo music being played in her home, and she loved old timey country music and later Outlaw country music. She researched her family history with vigor, interviewing family members and recording stories. She travelled with her sister Sharron and her dad, working on genealogy long before the internet existed, and instilling that curiosity about her roots in her children. She always wanted to travel to her ancestral lands of England, Ireland, and Scotland, but work and health issues prevented her from it. 

 

Shona had a spectacular sense of humor. She kept her family laughing uncontrollably at every get-together with hilarious stories and self-deprecating humor. She was very good at discerning truth, and she was always available with solid wisdom to share with her family when they needed her. She lifted us up and made us feel like we were the smartest, and most important and special people on earth. She helped many of us when we felt hopeless. We can only hope we were able to do the same for her. 

 

Her strength and humor will be missed more than we can describe. She was truly a matriarch. 

 

She was known as Mimi to her grandchildren, and since she was in her 30s when her first grandchild was born, she invested a lot of time helping her daughter Sherrie raise Courtney Blaine. She and Courtney have had a very special bond these last 37 years that has been untouchable, due to Mimi thinking she was Courtney’s mother instead of grandmother. That connection will forever be unbreakable. 

 

Shona is predeceased by her husbands Conrad Neil Crumly and Richard E. Smith, her first born daughter Sherrie Lynn Crumly Spence LeJohn, her parents, and her brother Jon Chambless. 

 

Left to mourn her are her daughter Tracy Crumly Bergeson Kral (David); step-sons Richie Smith (Audra) and Billy Smith (Kay); step-daughters Nikki Smith Coggins (Jeff) and Bobbie Smith Banach

 

Grandchildren: Courtney Blaine Spence MacArthur (Ben), Alexa LeJohn Gleaton (Robbie), Adam Bergeson (Jordan), Samantha Bergeson, Frank Kral, Hazel Kral, Chase Smith, Caleigh Smith, Trisha Doty, Richie Smith Jr (Falyn), Lindsey Coggins Findley (Caleb), Kristin Coggins Cassinat (Josh),  Marisa Coggins, Mary Banach, and Zach Banach

 

Great grandchildren: Jake, Johnny, Guinevere, Laina, Campbell, and Michael

 

Siblings: Sharron Colvin Huffstutler (Roger), Glendon Colvin (Nancy), Deborah Tucker Becker, Marilyn Chambless Williams, Billy Chambless Jr. (Rhonda), Melissa Chambless Pace, Tina Chambless Whitfield, and Chad Chambless.

 

Shona Blaine Colvin is irreplaceable, in our hearts and minds forever. She lives on through us and we cherish our memories with her. 

 

Services will be held in Locust Fork, Alabama on April 15, 2023 at 11am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Then a graveside service will be held in Lexington, SC on Tuesday, April 18th at 1pm at Woodridge Cemetery, where she will be interred next to her daughter Sherrie Lynn.
